01

Outdoor protection is a complete system

A weather-resistant light source is only one part of an outdoor sign. Cable exits, connectors, power supplies, fixings, drainage and the backing construction must all suit the environment. Water usually finds weak points at transitions rather than through the main material.

02

The installation position matters

A sign beneath a deep canopy experiences different exposure from one mounted directly to an open façade. Coastal air, direct sun, freezing conditions and areas with heavy rainfall can all influence material and component selection.

The specification should therefore describe the actual location, not just say ‘outdoor’. Photographs, wall construction and available power access help identify the correct solution.

03

Indoor signs allow more visual freedom

Inside a controlled environment, the design can focus more heavily on fine detail, discreet mounting and close-up finish. Power supplies can often be concealed more easily, and lightweight backing options become possible.

Temporary outdoor use should still be treated separately. A sign that can tolerate a short protected event is not automatically suitable for permanent façade installation.

04

Plan power and maintenance before installation

Power components should remain accessible for servicing without dismantling the entire sign. Cable routes need to avoid standing water and sharp edges. For larger projects, separating the sign into serviceable sections can reduce future disruption.

  • Confirm the exact installation position and wall construction.
  • Define whether the exposure is temporary, protected or permanent.
  • Plan accessible power supplies and safe cable routes.
  • Use mounting hardware specified for the substrate and environment.
05

Specify the environment before the design is final

Outdoor suitability cannot be added as a last-minute label. When the environment is known from the beginning, the visual concept, dimensions and construction can be developed together and the finished sign will perform as intended.
